Why people come to therapy

Everyone comes to therapy for a reason. There is something you are holding on to, experiencing, or conflicted by that needs attention. Therapy gives it space, takes it seriously, and helps you find a way through.

We also come to therapy because we have a sense that we might get further with overcoming our struggles if we don’t try to do it alone. So at the heart of therapy is the relationship between us.

Therapy is a two-way conversation built on trust, curiosity, and respect. I bring my reflections and observations when they may be helpful, offering new perspectives while always supporting your autonomy. Together, we explore what will best support your growth, clarity, and well-being.

Choosing the right approach for you

Some people flourish with having open-space in therapy for exploration, whilst others benefit from structured, goal-focused sessions. Others find a combination of both works best. When you begin therapy, we can discuss which approach—or mix of approaches—feels most supportive for you.

‘Open Space’ Therapy

Open-space therapy offers a safe, supportive space to explore whatever is arising for you—your thoughts, emotions, experiences, or the patterns you notice in your life. It is a more classic therapeutic approach, where you decide in every session what you want to talk about and we explore together wherever that takes us.

My role is to provide a genuine relationship that facilitates and supports your process. I will offer you my thoughts along the way, but always with the aim of helping you arrive at your own insights and solutions.

Therapies like Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) can be woven in as it feels helpful, along with reflections on Buddhist ideas where relevant.

The aim is to give attention to what matters most to you, help you notice your patterns, and begin to respond in ways that feel supportive and life-affirming.

Structured, Goal-Focused Therapy

Structured therapy is about working toward goals that are meaningful to you. These goals might be more emotional, more practical, or a combination of both.

When the focus is emotional, we might explore areas such as managing difficult feelings, self-criticism, inner conflict, or challenging relationships with others. In this work, I draw on Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT) to help you cultivate a kinder, more supportive relationship with yourself, and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) to clarify your values and take conscious, choiceful steps toward living in line with them.

You might also have more practical goals. Working on these in therapy gives you a chance to notice and explore your emotional relationship with these goals, understand what might hold you back, and create more balanced expectations and sometimes make difficult choices that align with your priorities.

Goals you set may or may not be Buddhist-related. For clients interested in integrating their practice, goals could include:

  • Developing personal ethics in line with the Eightfold Path

  • Working with personal precepts to create balance in your life

  • Progressing with meditation or other spiritual practices

Goals that aren’t directly related to Buddhism are equally welcome, and might for example be around improving everyday self-care that can be a challenge for so many people.

Together, we take time to clarify what matters most to you, set realistic goals, and decide how I can best support you and how you can best support yourself.
